Weimer Pursell: The Thumbnail Sketches

Weimer Pursell: The Thumbnail Sketches

On view in this exhibition is just a small portion of this process rich collection and its many gouache thumbnail sketches that provide evidence of the visual thinking that led to final product, all created by hand, well before the digital era. The Pursell collection was one of three areas of the UTC Permanent Collection of Art targeted in a 2016 Preservation Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Clamor of Ordinary Things

The Clamor of Ordinary Things

A group exhibition of contemporary photography, video, and animation curated by Carolyn Lambert, UTC Lecturer in Photography and Media Arts. The works in this exhibition critically reflect on identity through a relation between objects, clothing, and everyday life. Danielle Dean animates Nike’s sneaker, "True Red", into various forms – a bat, a castle, a red substance, a woman. The “swoosh” also appears in Jared Thorne’s "Black Palimpsest", which explores the exchange of signifiers of authenticity and belonging, power and wealth, between Black American and Black African social worlds. In Zhiyuan Yang’s series, "Family of Three", the discomfort of gender roles and heteronormative family life are played out in dramatic and humorous role-swapping tableaus. Pat Miller Gamble’s work shares this sense of performativity—"Raytheon 2016 Q2 Earnings Conference Call: A Reenactment" connects the ahistorical indulgence of medieval cosplay with contemporary arms speculation.
